Robertson and Hults Win the Performance Wheel & Tire and USG Asphalt Assault
Monday, 03 August 2009 17:12
It’s been a crazy season at Colorado National Speedway. With hundreds of competitors signed up, all vying for a chance at a win, only one thing stands absolutely clear – CNS has one of the strongest short-track racing programs in the world! The Rocky’s Autos Late Models events have been consistently intense with plenty of passing and action to keep the fans guessing until the end. Cris Muhler, Bruce “The Moose” Yackey, Rick Smith, Ronnie Hults and Darren Robertson have all taken at least one win while Roger Avants, Darren Crocker, Tyler Chrisinger and Darren Bucklen have been nipping at their heels night after night giving the leaders a run for their money! Still, Cris Muhler’s sheer skill and determination make him a smart pick for the season championship. And now that Mother Nature has been given the black flag, these guys will finally have a chance to show us all who has what it takes.
Colorado National Speedway’s Snap-On Tools Pro Truck division has given fans a veritable roller coaster ride of excitement throughout the season. Whether you like him or not, Happy Ferree’s style and skill is a spectacle to look forward to. Adam Deines, Billy Harkins, Chris Leaf and Roger Avants are always ready to get into the fight for first and the clean tactics of Mark Neff continue to impress the throngs of screaming fans. As of this writing, Deines, Neff and Ferree are all within 3 points of each other for the point lead and with so many talented drivers on the track it could be anyone’s season.
#42 Ronnie Hults, a fan favorite at Colorado National Speedway spent the first 22 laps of the first 40 lap Rocky’s Autos Late Model A Main determined to take the win. At lap 23 he made a break on the outside of #74 Dan Savage along the front stretch taking the lead. #11 Darren Robertson put on a show as well, taking 2nd by lap 38.
Hults said the car has been good to him all season long.
Due to the number of rain outs we’ve endured this season at Colorado National Speedway, we’ll be doing twin Late Model 40s every week.
Muhler, Yackey, Robertson and Hults made the 2nd Rocky’s Autos Late Model A Main an intense race to watch. All 4 competitors have won this year and are in the running for the season point championship. Robertson took the lead over Muhler on the inside half way through and continued to pull away throughout the rest of the race, sealing his eventual victory.
#46 Eric “Blackey” Blackard was running away with the 30 lap Comfort Shack Sportsman A Main at Colorado National Speedway until caution half way in lined him back up with #62 Jim Bob Rogers. Jim Bob and #6 Tommy Roe took advantage of the restart, blowing by Blackey. Jim took the win followed closely by Roe.
The winner of the night’s first Super Modified qualifier, #7s Stevie Gallegos lost her motor 3 laps into the ERA Super Mod A Main. #2 Rich Castor Jr, #3 Harold Evans, #8 Larry Lapoint & #11 Nick Haygood came out of the woodwork to duel for the win. Castor crossed the checkered first, followed by Haygood.
As the field thinned during the first half of the Loveland Goodyear Figure 8 A Main, #22 Joe Matlock, #23 Al Duran & #17 Harry Livermore Jr stood out as contenders for the win. At lap 16, the leading Matlock was coming up on lapped traffic which gave Duran a clear route into first on the outside, but a spin out on the track brought on caution and lined them back up for a restart. Joe Matlock held onto his lead for the win followed by Al Duran in 2nd.
Talented RMLRA Legends drivers #8 Jon Krizman & #66 Kyle Clegg didn’t surprise when they shot to the front of the field during the 25 lap A Main. The surprise was 14 year old Justin Irwin in the #12 legend who won the 2nd qualifying race of the evening. He started on the inside of row 3 and moved into the top 3 early on. By time the white flag waved, he was hot on the heels of Jon Krizman and Kyle Clegg. Krizman passed the checkered first followed by Clegg and Irwin.
