A Photo Finish Win for Sportsman Driver Bruce Borchardt
Saturday, 22 May 2010 22:14
Dodging talented drivers, lapped cars and fireballs (no joke) Bruce Borchardt, Blackie Blackard and Jim Bob Rogers made the 40 lap Sportsman A Main an event to remember. A hair-raising last lap pass over Blackie Blackard lead Borchardt to victory.
PAIR-A-DICE Sportsman
A field of 27 Sportsman kicked off the 40 lap A Main with #39 Scott Estes leading the pack. #98 Lee Kemmit had the outside of row 1. #62 Jim Bob Rogers had the inside of row 2 with #8 Jeff Walbaum on his outside. #46 Eric "Blackie" Blackard had the inside of row 3. #6 Tommy Roe was slated for Blackie's outside but was sent to the rear of the field for failing pre-race tech. Scott Estes took the lead as the field crossed the starting line. Jim Bob Rogers pulled into 2nd going into lap 3. At Lap 5 #02 Richard Hunt was involved in a collision along the back stretch and his machine BURST INTO FLAMES. A fire crew reached Hunt in no time and doused the flames lickety-split. Richard Hunt was a-okay. Estes and Jim Bob lined it up for a restart with Blackie Blackard close behind. Jim Bob moved into the lead, Blackie followed suit, passing Estes to move into 2nd place. A spin out brought on another yellow flag, lining Jim Bob and Blackie up for a restart. The two dueled through 2 laps with Blackie taking the lead. #84 Bruce Borchardt passed the 62 of Jim Bob Rogers for 2nd. All the while, #6 Tommy Roe was moving seamlessly through the field. A hard hit to the wall in turn 2 surgically removed the front of #30 Bear Lynch's car. With only 10 laps to go, the gang lined up yet again for a restart. When they got back to green flag racing, Borchardt was glued to Blackard's backside as hard charger Tommy Roe made a move for the 3rd position. A final yellow flag at lap 38 meant a drag race between Borchardt and Blackie for the win. It was a photo finish with Borchardt taking the win! Blackie Blackard finished 2nd, Tommy Roe finished 3rd.

Unintimidated by the infamous (and talented) Happy Ferree, Chris Leaf had his eye on the prize from the get go. #07 Chris Leaf started things off on the outside of row 2. #1 Happy Ferree had the outside of row 3. By lap 8, Ferree had patiently made his way up the field, taking the kind of commanding lead he's famous for. A yellow flag at lap 24 lined Ferree up with Leaf for a restart. Leaf and Ferree rode door handle to door handle through laps 24 and 25. At lap 26 Leaf took Ferree via the inside along the back stretch. Happy attempted a move on Leaf's inside to no avail. Ferree dove on Leaf's inside again and a 3 lap drag race between the two ensued! It was the final lap, Leaf and Ferree rubbed against each other along the back stretch, through turns 3 and 4, and coming into the front stretch. Chris Leaf crossed the finish line first, taking the win by a nose!
CARC Mod Coupes
The green flag flew and #95 Cris Muhler blew to the front of the pack in his first ever Mod Coupe race. Meanwhile, #55 Gary Land maneuvered from his 5th place starting position into 2nd place. A spin out in turn 1 resulted in a yellow flag, lining Land up with Muhler for a double file restart. Muhler elected to take the outside and pulled away from the pack once again. Land followed closely in 2nd until he got sideways at lap 19 giving #09 Frank Denning the opening he needed to take the spot on Muhler's tail. Cris Muhler took the win followed by Frank Denning and Gary Land.
RMLRA Legends
30 cars started the 25 lap Legend A Main. The count was reduced to 29 when fan favorite #66 Kyle Clegg left the track prior to green flag racing and was disqualified. #3 Wayne Barlock had the lead at lap 8 when contact on the back stretch brought on a yellow flag. At the restart, Barlock pulled away from the pack with #17 Terry Plummer in hot pursuit. As the leaders approached lapped traffic, rookie Pete Delarco in the #13 car and #03 Darrell Stewart approached Plummer, making it a 3 way fight for 2nd. Barlock took the win followed by Terry Plummer and Pete Delarco.
