Lee Kemmit drives the GTI/DEKA Dodge to victory on a gorgeous Colorado evening at CNS
Sunday, 10 June 2012 09:47

(Dacono, CO 06-09-2012) It was 95 degrees when the racing began at Colorado National Speedway but the heat on the track was even more intense as #98 Lee Kemmit and #8 Jeff Walbaum raced side by side to the finish in the Sportsman main event. #27 Roger Avants won the Pro Truck Feature, #66 Kyle Clegg took the legend feature and #3 Harold Evans won the ERA Supermodified main event.
Pair-A-Dice Sportsman
The Sportsman main event got off to a ominous start when #53 Joshua Meranda spun in turn 2 and was hit head on by #47 Jan Oxley, neither driver was hurt yet both cars sustained major damage. After the restart #8 Jeff Walbaum took the lead but the unstoppable #98 of Lee Kemmit was hot on his tail. With 20 laps left to go Kemmit worked his way to the inside of Walbaum and the two drivers traded paint for several laps. With under 10 laps to go impressive rookie #7 Ethan Penrod veered hard into the turn one wall after suffering a front end mechanical problem. After a long cleanup the double file restart placed Walbaum and Kemmit side by side once again resuming what had been a fantastic race for the lead. In the final few laps it was Kemmit on the outside and Walbaum on the inside lap after lap, side by side thrilling the large CNS crowd. At the finish it was Kemmit over Walbaum by just a couple of feet. In 3rd was the #84 of Bruce Borchardt, 4th was #6 Tommy Roe and rounding out the top 5 was #41n of Mark Neff.
FAST DASH WINNER: #84 Bruce Borchardt
DASH WINNER: #72 Gary Cagle
QUICK TIME: #98 Lee Kemmit 17.870
Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks
#11 Steve Johnson led the first 7 laps of the Snap-On Tools Pro Truck feature event in his white and orange machine but it was crafty veteran and last years track champion Roger "the ice man" Avants who stole the lead from Johnson after a long side by side battle. After Avants settled in to the lead Johnson spun in turn 4 this setup a double file restart with Avnats and last weeks winner #31 Justin Simonson on the front row. It was ruled that the #07 of Chris Leaf helped Johnson spin and during the caution both Leaf and Johnson took turns smacking into one another and were black flagged by NASCAR officials. After the restart Avants grabbed the lead but Simonson blew a cooling hose spewing water all over the track causing several other trucks to spin. None of the remaining drivers could catch Avants who won rather easily but a great battle for 2nd thrilled the fans when #5 Troy Witthar made a last lap pass on #06 Adam Hilton. #36 Matt Burton was 4th and #16 Scott Rhoades finished 5th.
FAST DASH WINNER: #36 Matt Burton
DASH WINNER: #41 Mark Neff
QUICK TIME: #27 Roger Avants 16.870
RMLRA Legend Cars
In what might have been the best race of the night #06 Mike Gallegos jumped out to an early lead in the RMLRA Legend car main event. However #15 Danny Medina, #66 Kyle Clegg, and #22 Chris Eggleston were all hot on his tail and battling for the lead. Clegg made a daring pass around Medina diving into turn one and began to put pressure on Gallegos for the lead. Behind the two leaders Eggleston and Medina were battling side by side for 3rd spot but that was allowing Gallegos and Clegg to build a much larger lead at the halfway mark of the race. Clegg pulled up on the inside of Gallegos and the two battled side by side for several lap, it was that battle which allowed Eggleston to catch the leaders and make it a 3 car race for the win. The finish of the race was filled with excitement as the three leaders scrambled to pass lapped traffic. At the finish it was Clegg taking the win, Gallegos in 2nd and Eggleston in 3rd. 4th place went to Medina and rounding out the top 5 was #7 Corey Seip.
FAST DASH WINNER: #66 Kyle Clegg
DASH WINNER: ##85 Cole MacEwen

ERA Supermodifieds
#3 Harold Evans and #2 Richie Castor Jr. started in 7th and 8th spot in the ERA Supermodified feature event yet by the end of the first lap the two had already moved into 1st and 2nd position. Evans and Castor built a large lead and the only car within shouting distance was the #51 of Joe Priselac who broke down with just 4 laps to go. Castor gave Evans a race for the win but it was too little too late as HJ Evans won yet another ERA Supermodified main event. 3rd place went to #54 Matt Gilbert, 4th was #12 Mike Anderson and the #88 of Matt Griffin came in 5th.
DASH WINNER: #1 Stevie Gallegos
QUICK TIME: #2 Richie Castor Jr. 14.571
DEMO X
In a whirlwind of dust sparks and twisted metal the DEMO X was a mad dash to the finish. After two different vans had flipped upside down the black truck of Chris Isles won a wild and wacky DEMO X which has to be seen to believed.
