#84 Bruce Borchardt narrowly beats #98 Lee Kemmit (Starr photo)
(08-04-2012 Dacono, CO) On one of the most gorgeous summer evenings of the year it was a night of surprise winner's that had the crowd buzzing at CNS. Bruce Borchardt in the Sportsman division, Steve Johnson in the Pro Trucks, Jeff Hunter in the Grand American Modifieds, and Steel Dragon in the Trains earned main event victories over the drivers who have dominated up to this point in the season. The only division to buck the trend was the CARC Mod Coupes where perennial race favorite Gary Land took home the big iron.
A textbook start for #84 Bruce Borchardt as he jumped out to a huge lead over #58 Jeff Webb at the drop of the green flag in the Pair A Dice Interior Finishes Sportsman main event. #3 Wade Grove worked past Webb for second and #8 Jeff Walbaum and #98 Lee Kemmit were right behind. The pair of Walbaum and Kemmit worked past Grove and began to close on Borchardt. Kemmit drove his Dodge low and made a daring pass on Walbaum to grab second place. Kemmit tried the same move on the leader Borchardt but Bruce wouldn't give an inch and the two cars ran side by side lap after lap bringing the cheering CNS fans to the edge of their seat. Borchardt used slower cars to perfection and was somehow able to stay on the outside of Kemmit who was racing him hard (but clean) for the last dozen laps of the race. On the final turn it looked as if Kemmit had the slight advantage over Borchardt but as the two cars crossed the line the #84 of Borchardt was mere inches out in front of Kemmit's Dodge. #8 Jeff Walbaum was in 3rd, #3 Wade Grove finished 4th and rounding out the top 5 was the #58 of Jeff Webb.
FAST DASH WINNER: #8 Jeff Walbaum
DASH WINNER: #01 Pete Maas
QUICK TIME: #98 Lee Kemmit 17.805
#11 Steve Johnson jumped out to a huge lead in the Snap-On Tools Pro Truck main event. A impressive run for #17 Jeremy Barclay as he was running strong in second place but #36 Matt Burton was on the inside of Barclay giving him a great battle for position. #7 Adam Deines joined the battle for second yet it was that fierce battle that was allowing Johnson to increase his lead to a full straightaway! Deines eventually took command of second place but by that point in the race Johnson had too big of a lead for Deines to conquer and Johnson cruised in for his first ever Pro Truck victory. Steve was followed by Deines, Burton, Barclay, and rounding out the top 5 was #27 Roger Avants.
FAST DASH WINNER: #7 Adam Deines
DASH WINNER: #31 Justin Simonson
QUICK TIME: #11 Steve Johnson 16.639
#4T Brad Tilton and #27 Mike Hathaway paced the field for the Sunoco Grand American Modified main event. While Mike Hathaway grabbed the early lead great action throughout the entire field of Sunoco Modifieds thrilled the CNS fans. After a long red flag to cleanup the contents of #44 Justin Case's engine, the cars lined back up and this time race favorite #77 Jeff Hansen was right on Hathaway's bumper. Hathaway and Hansen battled door to door for a few laps but then Hansen slowed dramatically and pulled off the track with mechanical problems. With Hansen out of the race Hathaway built a large lead yet with just two laps to go the #69 of Mike Edwards spun bringing out the caution setting up a green, white, checker finish. Hathaway chose the inside on the double-file restart with #28 Jeff Hunter on the outside. When the green dropped Hunter was clearly faster than Hathaway but Hunter appeared to be loose exiting the turns. On the final turn of the final lap Hunter bobbled coming out of turn four allowing Hathaway to make a move for the lead. Yet Hathaway wasn't alone as he had #22 Mike Castagno making his own move. In thrilling fashion the three cars crossed the line 3 abreast! Hunter narrowly took the win with Hathaway and Castagno just inches behind. Tilton took 4th and the other #4 car driven by Mark Sopr was 5th.
FAST DASH WINNER: #77 Jeff Hansen
DASH WINNER: #28 Jeff Hunter
QUICK TIME: #77 Jeff Hansen 16.966
#55 Gary Land came from way back in the 8th starting spot to take the lead in the CARC Mod Coupe main event within just a few laps. Halfway through the race the only car within a straightaway of Land was the #34 of Randy Whitman. The beautiful black with flames #29 of Dave Johnson was running a strong third and began to reel in Whitman for second yet on this night the determined Land was not to be denied. By the end of the race the red #55 of Gary Land won by a half of a lap over Whitman and Johnson.
FAST DASH WINNER: #34 Randy Whitman
QUICK TIME: #55 Gary Land 16.187
