Grove gets his first during the Great Scott’s Eatery All-American Race

Updated: Mar 11, 2022

(07–02-2016 Dacono Colorado) On a night filled with fantastic racing, dramatic finishes, and an incredible fireworks display, a massive crowd witnessed Wade Grove win his first ever Late Model feature event holding off Ethan Penrod and Brett Yackey. In the Pro Trucks Kody Vanderwal also won his first feature by making a stunning last corner pass on both Adam Deines and Jay Fields. Jason Irwin from New Mexico won in the Legend cars, and Jereme Wall won his 5th straight Figure 8 feature of the 2016 season.

Palomino Industries Late Models

The Great Scott’s Eatery All-American Race ended in dramatic fashion as Wade Grove in the #3 car took home his first ever Palomino Industries Late Model feature win when contact between #7 Ethan Penrod and #32 Brett Yackey in turn 2 caused a yellow on the final lap. Grove was fast all night long as he battled early leader Mike Valentine in the #18 car in the early stages of the race.

With less than halfway to go it appeared that Valentine was beginning to struggle as he moved way down on the track running a very low line. This allowed Grove to pull along outside and eventually grab the lead. Valentine’s night got worse when he made hard contact with the #27 car of Wendi Lewis after she spun in turn 2. Valentine was able to continue but Wendi’s night was done.

On the subsequent restart Penrod was warned by NASCAR officials not to jump the start and when he did it again on the next restart he was docked 2 positions. Penrod was still in contention until the final lap when he and Yackey made contact in turn two allowing Grove to sail to his first victory. In the last lap melee 90p Kyle Patee snuck by several cars to take second place with Penrod taking 3rd in a heavily damaged car. Yackey settled for 4th and the #88 Brent Miller was the final car in the top 5.

Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks

In one of the wildest finishes in recent memory at CNS young Kody Vanderwal in the #43 Pro Truck made a last corner pass on both #7 Adam Deines and #1 Jay Fields to take home the improbable win. Nearly all of the 30 lap Snap-On Tools Pro Truck main event featured a thrilling battle for the lead between Deines who was on the inside and Fields who was on the outside. Lap after lap the two trucks traded paint thrilling the crowd at CNS. Deines would edge into the lead at the apex of each corner while Fields would power back out front down the straightaways.

On the final lap as the two leaders battled for the win they made contact in turns three and four. Fields and Deines scrambled to beat each other across the line but it was Kody Vanderwal going under both of them just barely nosing out Fields for the win. The stunned crowd cheered for the efforts of all three drivers but especially for the young Vanderwal who picked up his first ever Pro Truck feature win.

Lincoln College Pure Stocks

21 Lincoln College of Technology Pure Stock took the green flag for a 25 lap feature event. There was a scary moment at the start of the race when #31 Mike Matthiesen spun on the back straight and was t-boned by #17 Elizabeth Beirle who had no place to go. Both of the drivers were okay but there was significant damage to their vehicles. Moments later on the restart #8 David Lewis lost a rear wheel and crashed into the turn 4 wall.

Once the race resumed and the drivers began to settle into their groove an excellent battle for the lead ensued between #7 David Robinson, #33 Tyler Davis and #21 Jamie Ward. The top 3 cars battled side by side, in the high and low grooves navigating lapped traffic. At the line it was Robinson, Davis, and Ward, but a post race tech inspection would disqualify Robinson and hand the win over to Davis, his second of the season. Ward would grab a well-earned 2nd place finish with #03 Tyler Mander finishing an impressive 3rd. 4th place went to #26 Josh Friberg and the final spot in the top 5 was Natalie Phelps in the #98 car.

Legends

A massive field of 28 Legend Cars took the green flag for their feature event with 9x Jason Irwin from Albuquerque on the pole with #46 Zach Witherwax along side. Irwin would go on to lead every single lap of the caution filled race to take the win. It was by no means an easy victory for Irwin as he received heavy pressure from #22 Chris Eggleston and #15 Danny Medina. Irwin’s biggest challenge came with a double-file restart with just 2 laps to go as both Eggleston and Medina had their shot at the trophy. Eggleston was running the high line and Medina dove low going into turn one creating a momentary 3-wide situation yet Irwin didn’t bobble keeping them both at bay and snagging night one of the two-day Independence Day double header at CNS.

A late race restart gave Eggleston and Medina a shot at overtaking 9x Jason Irwin (Starr photo)

With Irwin in winner’s circle Eggleston and Medina had to settle for 2nd and 3rd position. In 4th was Scotty Scott who ran a strong race with #21 Ryan Jones and #66 Kyle Clegg in 5th and 6th.

Chick-Fil-A Figure 8s

There have now been 5 Chick-Fil-A Figure 8 main events in 2016 and Jereme Wall in the #15 car has won them all! Wall dominated the feature during the Great Scott’s Eatery All American Race winning by a half of a lap over the nearest competitor. The best battle in the race was for 2nd between #4 Sean Smith, #52 Jared Wall, #17 Harry Livermore Jr., #50 Justin McKeachie, and #9 Brent Cave. It was this pack of cars who began to hit traffic in the “X” causing the massive crowd and CNS to let out several “ooos” and “ahhhs”.

#67 Keith Swenson ends up facing the wrong direction in the X (Starr photo)

One of the most dramatic moments in the race came when #67 Keith Swenson spun in the X and ended up facing oncoming traffic sending cars scrambling to avoid him. Adding to the fun in the X longtime crowd favorite #86 “Squirrely” Shirley Thompson returned to action and performed some of her familiar hair-raising and daring near misses with other drivers.

But when it was all said and done the #15 car was simply in another universe as he blazed a trail to yet another huge win. Behind Wall it was Brent Cave finishing a strong 2nd, Jared Wall finishing 3rd, Sean Smith in 4th and Michael Haywood in the #01 finishing 5th.
