Hansen and Ursetta Win the Memorial Day Double Header

Updated: Mar 11, 2022

(Dacono 05-28 & 29-2016) Dominic Ursetta from Arvada Colorado capped off a fantastic weekend of racing and fireworks by using a late race caution to narrowly beat Westminster’s Darren Robertson in the 100 lap High Country Harley Davidson Memorial Day Race in the Super Late Models. On the first night of action Jace Hansen in the #08 Super Late Model led every lap of the 103.5 The FOX Honoring our Vets feature winning his 2nd race of the young 2016 season.

Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models

The final event of the massive 2-night Memorial Day celebration at CNS was the High Country Harley Davidson 100 lap Super Late Model race featuring a fantastic field of 23 Super Late Models. #32 Brett Yackey and #22 Chris Eggleston paced the field at the start of the race and Eggleston took control early. Darren Robertson in the #11 came from the outside of the second row to pressure Eggleston for the lead. Robertson used the low line to perfection to grab the spot and begin to build his lead.

There were a couple of crashes during the event. #58 Kyle Ray hit the turn 3 wall while trying to avoid cars that had slowed in front of him but the most serious crash was when #91 Chris Atkinson and #55 Rick Runkle hit the turn 2 wall hard while trying to avoid a spinning Brett Yackey in the #32 car. While there where no injuries in any of the crashes it did end the night for several drivers.

Up-front Robertson continued to lead but it was #6 Dominic Ursetta who had worked his way into second place well behind the leader that would eventually change the outcome of the race. It didn’t appear that Ursetta would be able to catch Robertson and in fact was slightly slower according to the electronic timing system.

Debris on the front straightaway brought out the caution with just 10 laps to go giving Ursetta one last shot at Robertson for the lead. Darren elected to take the low lane and give Ursetta the top groove. The 10 lap shootout between these two drivers was intense with each one taking a turn poking his nose out front. On more than one occasion it looked like both Robertson and Ursetta would get a little loose allowing the other to creep back out front but neither driver was giving an inch making for a fantastic finish. When the two cars crossed the line it was Ursetta by a slight margin over Robertson who settled for 2nd place. The incredible race was one of the best we have seen in recent memory as Ursetta and Robertson raced each other hard but clean demonstrating fantastic skill at a frantic pace. #84 Matt Zwingleberg took home the 3rd spot with #12 Bruce “the Moose” Yackey in 4th. Eggleston was the final finisher in the top 5.

Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks

AJ Warren in the #2 Pro Truck wasted no time jumping out to massive lead on the field in the Snap-On Tools Pro Truck feature event. #1 Jay Fields was all alone in 2nd place and a fantastic battle for 3rd place shaped up between #34 Rudy Vanderwal, #9 Curtis Heldenbrand, #43 Kody Vanderwal, and #36 Matt Burton.

By the end of the race Warren would build a 5 second lead over his nearest competitor leading every lap and taking the win. Fields would finish 2nd put fail his technical inspection allowing Kody Vanderwal to inherit the 2nd place spot. Kody’s dad Rudy took home 3rd place and Heldenbrand and #8 Jeff Walbaum rounded out the top 5.

Great Scotts Eatery Super Stocks

On the opening lap of the Great Scotts Eatery Super Stock feature event #22 Brian Yackey made a daring move under pole sitter #18 Robert Davey in turn 2 to grab second place. #96 Michael Steward had the lead until lap 5 when Yackey was finally able to take the spot and settle into his groove. #75 Levi Greenly would prove to be Yackey’s only threat in the event but was never able to close in and make a move to pass the leader.

Brian Yackey went on to win his first ever Super Stock feature at CNS with Greenly settling for 2nd place. #9 Curtis Heldenbrand ran strong and finished in 3rd place with #43 Kody Vanderwal close behind. The final spot in the top 5 went to #3 Michael Cox.

Lincoln College Pure Stocks

Rebecca Simpson in the #45 Lincoln College Pure Stock jumped out to a huge lead in the 25 lap feature event starting from the pole position. All eyes were on the action behind Simpson as Josh Friberg in the #26, Jeff Dempewolf in the #06, Michael Matthiesen in the #31, #7 David Robinson, and Tyler Davis in the #33 were battling for position. These 5 drivers were furiously moving through lapped traffic all vying for 2nd place. At one point Tyler Davis went low coming out of turn 4 sliding sideways to make a pass on a slower car thrilling the fans.

Eventually this pack of cars caught up to Simpson and began to pressure her for the lead. Unfortunately for Simpson she spun coming out of turn four and relinquished the lead to Dempewolf. Dempewolf built a large lead but in the final laps Davis and Robinson came charging towards the front but it wouldn’t be enough as Dempewolf would take his first win of the 2016 season. Davis grabbed second place, Friberg was 3rd, Michael Matthiesen took 4th and Robinson settled for 5th.

ERA Supermodifieds

The ERA Supermodifieds made their first appearance of 2016 and it was #2 Richie Castor Jr. who came from his 6th place starting spot to dominate and win the feature event. Castor’s great run in the feature came as somewhat of a surprise because he couldn’t seem to get the car running at all in his heat race. The only competition to Castor in the feature was from #13 Ricky Otts who used slower traffic to catch Castor near the finish but it was too little too late as the Castor took the win. Behind Castor and Otts it was Kyle Ray in the #58 finishing in 3rd place.

Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models

If there is one thing we have learned so far in the 2016 season it’s that Jace Hansen in the #08 Super Late Model did his homework in the off-season and has become a true force in the division. Hansen won the first feature event of the season on April 2nd and took home the huge win on the night one of the 2-day double header at CNS on Memorial Day weekend. Hansen started the 40 lap feature on the front row along side #58 Kyle Ray who would eventually finish in 2nd place behind Hansen. Jace had to contend with plenty of lapped traffic to keep the lead but he did so with perfection eventually building a 2 second lead on Ray who had earlier set quick time with a blistering 16.288.

Dominic Ursetta made the biggest move through the field as he started way back in 9th place yet grabbed a 3rd place finish masterfully working up through the large field of cars. #22 Chris Eggleston had a strong 4th place finish while #12 Bruce “the Moose” Yackey took home 5th.

SUNOCO Race Fuels Grand American Modifieds

Ed Vecchiarelli Jr. in the #48 Grand American Modified won a the feature event that went green from flag to flag. Vecchiarelli’s only real challenge came from Justin Case in the #44 car who gave Ed a run for his money. #0 Ron ONeal cruised home in the 3rd spot with #58 Kyle Ray in 4th. #88 Jeff Walbaum was the final car in the top 5.

Legend Cars

21 Rocky Mountain Legends Cars took the green flag on night one of the 2-day Memorial Day Race at CNS. #19 Larry Pachello had the pole and rookie driver #48 Cody Dempster was along side. Pachello got a great jump and took the lead but by lap two Danny Medina in the #15 car had pushed out front coming from his 9th place starting spot. #21 Ryan Jones wasn’t about to let Medina walk away with this one as he glued himself to Medina’s bumper for several laps.

#22 Chris Eggleston had an off week from the NASCAR K&N West Series and was also in the battle up front as was new father #66 Kyle Clegg.

The Legends feature was marred by several caution flags but none would prove to be more important than when Cody Dempster spun with 3 laps remaining. On the restart #6 Scotty Scott got into the side of Eggleston going down the back straight fighting for second place. As Eggleston began to spin in turn 3 the entire field of cars scrambled to avoid damage but there was just not enough room and several cars were swept up into the crash. Scotty Scott, Eggleston, Medina, and several other cars suffered race ending damage.

After a lengthy cleanup the race was restarted and Kyle Clegg who had gained the lead prior to the big crash cruised to the victory, his first of the season at CNS. Ryan Jones took second place, #25 Adam Pechman was 3rd, #47 Zach Witherwax finished 4th and Pachello grabbed the final spot in the top 5.
