Ursetta Notches His Second Consecutive Challenge Cup

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

(10-03-2015 Dacono CO) Hardcore CNS fans who braved the cold and wet October evening for Challenge Cup XLI laid witness to some great short track racing, trick-or-treating with the drivers for the kids, circle drags, and a world class fireworks show to end the 2015 season. Dominic Ursetta grabbed his second consecutive Cup victory in as many years in a rain shortened 100 lap Gillett Vet Clinic Super Late Model feature event.

Track owner Jim Nordhougen is presented the new street sign renaming “Graden Blvd” to “Speedway Blvd” from the Dacono City Mayor.

Young and old CNS fans mingled with the drivers in the CNS infield prior to Challenge Cup XLI in the annual Trick or Treating pre-race festivities.

In 2013 Darren Robertson won all the marbles on Challenge Cup night and in 2015 it was beginning to look as if he might grab another by winning the 10 lap preliminary feature event. That win placed Darren on the front row for the 100 lap final race of the season. No points were on the line so all the drivers were racing for pride and the large Challenge Cup purse.

When the 100 lapper started Darren picked up where he left off jumping out to a large lead on #84 Matt Zwingleberg who got loose when the green flag dropped and bumped Robertson’s door. Undeterred, Robertson began to build his lead.

Dominic Ursetta who started back in 6th position had quickly moved up to 3rd place and started working on Zwingleberg for 2nd place. Behind the leaders a mass of cars were all fighting for position in the competitive 22 car field.

Up front Robertson had built a large lead but now that Ursetta was in second place as he slowly began to eat away at the lead. Unfortunately for Robertson there was a caution flag which allowed Ursetta to lineup along side for the double-file restart. When the green dropped Ursetta powered his way to the front while #22 Chris Eggleston made his presence felt passing Zwingleberg for 3rd place.

A couple more caution flags came out for minor altercations on the track and that’s when the rain drops started to fall. After 44 laps were complete track officials determined the race would not be able to continue and Ursetta was declared the winner. Robertson settled for 2nd place with Eggleston taking 3rd.

Ursetta’s win capped off a marvelous 2015 season winning 10 feature events and for the second year in a row demonstrating his mastery of the Super Late Model division.

Great Scotts Eatery Super Stocks

3c Chis Cox was the Super Stock Preliminary feature winner but the main event would shake things up as the Super Stocks and Pure Stocks were combined. With 30 cars on the track the action was mind-numbing as cars were literally all over the track.

Once again Chris Cox was out front hoping to sweep both features. Directly behind Cox was none other than Brian Yackey the son of Bruce, and brother of Brett, in the #22 car and he was pushing for the lead. #75 Levi Greenly who had set quick time with a 19.721 had worked his way up to 3rd and eventually got by Yackey for 2nd place.

Greenly tracked down Chris Cox and took the lead. Brian Yackey also got by Cox and began to reel in Greenly. It looked like it was going to be a great 2 car battle through traffic but a slower car spun in front of Yackey and clipped Yackey’s rear quarter panel sending him spinning into the infield.

Greenly then cruised to the win over #3 Michael Cox and 3c Chris Cox. #18 Robert Davey finished an impressive 4th and Yackey settled for 5th.

Lincoln Tech Pure Stocks

In the Pure Stock preliminary main event #21 Jamie Ward held off #43 Kody Vanderwal and #31 Mike Mathieson to take the victory. However in the final feature the Pure Stocks were combined with the Super Stocks creating a wild main event with 3 and 4 wide action all over the track.

When all the dust settled it was #84 Joe Mares wining his first ever Pure Stock feature event. Mathieson was second and Ward took 3rd.

Legends

When #66 Kyle Clegg and #22 Chris Eggleston go head to head in the Legends division you know you are going to get your moneys worth and that’s just what happened in both the preliminary and final feature events. In the prelim it was Clegg who came out on top but in the final race it was Eggleston who snuck by Clegg in the late stages after Clegg got loose coming out of turn 4. Clegg made a final run and Eggleston but couldn’t pull off the pass and the 22 took the hard-fought win.

Clegg settled for 2nd place with #15 Danny Medina coming from way back in the field to take 3rd. #6 Scotty Scott who set quick time also started deep in the field and grabbed 4th place with #25 Adam Pechman in 5th.

DEMOX

Rain didn’t stop the DEMOX cars and trucks from putting on a great show thrilling the fans one last time as they slid through the mud and slippery pavement. #87 Jake Fitzgerald outlasted all the carnage in the “Lite” division to take the win while #01 Sean Orth made a late race pass to win the “Heavy” division.
