Ursetta sweeps both segments of the Famous Dave’s BBQ Special at CNS

(07-05-2014 Dacono, CO) A warm Colorado summer evening was the setting for the Famous Dave’s BBQ Special at CNS and the large crowd enjoyed some great racing and a huge fireworks display to end the night. Dominic Ursetta won both segments of the 80 lap Super Late Model special and Ethan Penrod won his first ever Late Model feature. Michael Cox held off all challengers to win the Super Stock feature and Ron Reed and Gage Mcallister won the 250cc and 450cc Supermoto events.

Gillett Vet Clinic Super Late Models. A large field of Gillett Vet Clinic Super Late Models were on hand to run the Famous Dave’s BBQ Special which is a 80 lap event that is broken into 2 segments. The first segment is a 30 lap race after which the drivers and teams have a chance to make final adjustments in preparation for the last 50 lap segment.

But on this night none of the drivers had anything for young Dominic Ursetta in the #6 car as he crushed the competition in both segments.

Ursetta started on the pole in the first segment and cruised to the easy win. Yet that finish would force him to start in the third row of the final 50 lap segment. However it didn’t take long for the 6 car to move up into 2nd place passing #22 Chris Eggleston and then pulling up on #39 Jack Nugent who had built a rather large lead on the field. As Ursetta began to challenge Nugent the #39 crackled and sent off a shower of sparks as Jack’s night was done and he pulled into the infield.

From that point on Ursetta cruised to the win and ultimately built a massive lead on the field. Behind the leader a great battle was raging between #12 Bruce Yackey and #31 Rick Smith, as the two former champions raced side by side navigating lapped traffic. Bad luck for both Eggleston and #74 Dan Savage who had won the FAST DASH as they exited the race with mechanical troubles past the halfway point.

Behind Ursetta, Smith, and Yackey, was the #11 of Darren Robertson who seemed to get stronger as the race progressed but couldn’t mount a charge to finish higher than 4th place. However with the strong finish Darren sits in 2nd place behind Ursetta in the season standings.

At the flag it was Ursetta by a straightaway over Rick Smith and Bruce Yackey. Robertson in 4th and #27 Roger “the Ice-Man” Avants with a strong 5th place finish.

South Philly Cheesesteak Late Models. #7 Ethan Penrod’s night didn’t start out very well as he blew a tire in the FAST DASH which could have easily been the end of his night had he not saved the car from hitting the wall. But in the 30 lap feature event Ethan’s fortunes changed dramatically as he grabbed the lead from #3 Wade Grove on lap 4 and went on to win his first ever Late Model Feature event.

While Penrod built a large lead early #41 Mark Neff worked his way around 2nd place driver #8 Jeff Walbaum and began to track down Penrod for the lead. With just 5 laps to go Penrod’s lead had completely evaporated and Neff was right on his tail.

Yet the determined Penrod saved his best for last as he held off the charging Neff which landed Ethan squarely in winner’s circle taking home the large trophy. Neff finished a close second and Walbaum was 3rd. #76 Chad Cowan crossed the line 4th and #3 Wade Grove took the final spot in the top 5.

NTC Logistics Super Stocks. #3 Michael Cox started on the pole position in the NTC Logistics Super Stock feature but had to earn every penny of his victory as #19 Brent Miller, #32 Brett Yackey and #88 David Rothrock where in hot pursuit for the entire 30 laps. Both Miller and Yackey took turns running second trying to get by Cox but the blue #3 was just too fast and went on to win his 3rd feature of the 2014 season. Cox holds a narrow 2 point lead in the standings over Rothrock.
