Pueblo Bank & Trust “Local People Making Local Decisions” Night Full Of Action At CNS

July 16th, 2022
Colorado National Speedway was a hotbed of on-track action on Saturday, July 16th, with stellar car counts and hot competition throughout all divisions. The vintage and antique Fords owned by members of the Northern Colorado Model A Club took to the track to give viewers a taste of the past, and the night closed with a thrilling performance from the crazy Trains.

Matco Tools Pro Trucks Feature – 30 Laps
Brian Yackey’s No. 22 truck led the Pro Truck field to green, with the No. 9 of Curtis Heldenbrand starting next to him. Early on, Yackey’s No. 22 truck checked out while the field jostled behind him, allowing the No. 82 of Michael Scott to begin working his way toward the front. Halfway through the race, the top five trucks strung out, but a caution waved on Lap 17 when Steve Johnson’s No. 11 and Tyler Wiggans in the No. 50 made contact, causing Johnson to spin out in Turn 3. Yackey’s No. 22 truck retained control on the ensuing restart, but the No. 82 of Scott quickly made himself known as he got around the No. 9 of Heldenbrand for second. With just eight laps left, Scott’s No. 82 and Yackey’s No. 22 were battling neck-and-neck for the race lead. The two made slight contact entering Turn 1, and Yackey drifted high, having suffered a cut tire from the incident. This allowed Scott’s No. 82 to assume the race lead, and he checked out, leading Heldenbrand’s No. 9 as the laps ticked down. Heldenbrand couldn’t find a way around Scott, and Scott’s No. 82 truck was crowned the feature winner.

Sunoco Race Fuels Grand American Modifieds Feature – 30 Laps
Kyle Clegg, behind the wheel of the No. 51 GAM machine, led the field to green with the No. 9 of CJ Wilson hot on his tail in second place. Just four laps in, the No. 66 of John Seely spun out on the front stretch, and the field was slowed under caution. On the restart, Clegg’s No. 51 assumed the lead once again while the No. 9 of Wilson tried to hold off the No. 6 of Scotty Scott. Scott took over second place and set out after Clegg. The field strung out single file behind Clegg’s No. 51 as he led. It looked like Clegg would dominate the race, but with nine laps left, trouble struck his No. 51 machine. A mechanical failure on Clegg’s car sent him into the turn 4 wall, taking him out of contention for the remainder of the event. Clegg showed his frustration after he exited his race car under his own power. This incident handed the lead to the No. 6 of Scott, who restarted with the No. 9 of Wilson beside him. Scott’s No. 6 took off with the lead and didn’t look back, securing the GAM feature win.

AC Transmission & Total Car Care Legends Feature – 25 Laps
The No. 90 of Chasen Groff took off early for the first of two Legend features, as the No. 38 of Garrett Wilson slipped into second place. It didn’t take long for Groff’s No. 90 to put some healthy distance on second-place Wilson, opening up a wide lead. However, before he could run off with it all the way to the checkered flag, a caution was waved for debris in Turn 3 about halfway through the race. It didn’t stall Groff’s No. 90, though, and he took off with the lead when the green flag waved again. Wilson’s No. 38 fell to the clutches of the No. 34 driven by Zach Mullins, and Wilson had a handful of loose racecar as he fended off Mullins’ charge for the second position. A single-car incident occurred with three laps to go, but the race stayed green, and Groff’s No. 90 kept his insurmountable lead to claim the first legends feature victory of the night.

Fast Feature – 25 Laps

On the front row, the No. 00 of Chris Saykally and No. 22 of Chris Eggleston took the green flag for the second Legend feature race. However, before they completed a lap, the No. 4 of Dillon Foster contacted the No. 45 of Cole Tuttle, causing a caution as safety crews worked to clean up the wrecked race cars. The race restarted, handing the lead to the No. 21 of Ryan Jones. Disaster struck soon after as almost a dozen cars got stacked up exiting Turn 4, piling into one another, sending the No. 37 of Tanner Scarberry into a barrel roll. A lengthy red flag ensued while the drivers and cars were attended to, and thankfully all involved exited their race cars under their own power.
When the race resumed, Jones in the No. 21 quickly took control of the field once again, while the No. 00 of Saykally fell to the clutches of the No. 66 Kyle Clegg and the No. 22 of Eggleston. While they battled for the second position, Jones in the No. 21 took off with the lead, until Clegg’s No. 66 began to reel him in. It seemed like Clegg had something for Jones, but after a few laps the No. 66 race car fell off, allowing Jones in the No. 21 to take off once again. Despite hitting lapped traffic, Jones navigated through to claim the fast legends feature and his first ever feature win at the speedway.

Puzzle Effect Bandoleros
Bandit Feature – 12 Laps
Reagan Fruge in the No. 5 Bandolero is a force to be reckoned with at CNS. He led flag-to-flag on his way to the race win, despite several incidents that occurred behind him. Thankfully, these cars did not impede the racing surface, and Fruge executed a three-wide pass through lapped traffic on his way to the Bandolero feature win.

Witthar Racing Trains
A full field of eight Trains, with the engine in the front and the brakes in the rear, took the green flag. The No. 151 Crazy Train took the lead early and dove through the Figure 8 X at the center of the racetrack, dodging incident from the other three-car conglomerations on the way to the checkered flag. Tires went down, tires bounced off, “caboose” cars swung loose and Trains dodged incident through the crossroads in a chaotic race. The No. 151 Crazy Train took it home when it was all said and done, ending the night on a thrilling, chaotic note.
