Famous Dave’s BBQ Special Goes To Ursetta and Robertson

(07–03-2016 Dacono Colorado) Night two of the Independence Day Double Header featured two Super Late Model feature events. Arvada’s Dominic Ursetta took home the 40 lap feature but was involved in a large crash in the final 50 lap feature ruining his chances for the repeat. Darren Robertson from Westminster grabbed the trophy in the second feature which wrapped up the Famous Dave’s BBQ Special. Greeley’s Brian Yackey won the Super Stock main event and Jason Irwin from Albuquerque won his 2nd straight Legends feature.

The Famous Dave’s BBQ Special would feature not one, but two Super Late Model feature events. The first being a 40 lapper to kickoff the final portion of the Independence Day celebration at CNS. 21 Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models took the green flag and Chris Eggleston in the #22 grabbed the early lead. Eggleston was checking out from the field until Dominic Ursetta moved into 2nd place and began to gain on the leader. After a couple mid-race caution flags Ursetta grabbed the lead from Eggleston and cruised to an easy win. Eggleston grabbed 2nd place, Darren Robertson in the #11 was 3rd with #84 Matt Zwingleberg 4th and #4 Bradley Tilton in 5th.

In the second and final feature of the night it would take 50 laps to determine the winner in the Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models. Dominic Ursetta’s dominating win earlier in the night would not be repeated as disaster struck early in the race when Eggleston spun coming out of turn 4 and collected Ursetta, #78 Darren Crocker, and #32 Brett Yackey, who would all need to be removed from the speedway on the back of a wrecker. After the lengthy cleanup it was Cheyenne’s Chris Atkinson in the #91 who was the race leader with #11 Darren Robertson along side. Robertson made his way into the lead and appeared to be the fastest car on the track as he quickly put distance between himself and the rest of the field. Several caution flags for spinning cars gave #08 Jace Hansen a shot at Robertson but Hanson’s car had a fair amount of cosmetic damage and was unable to overtake Robertson.

As the race moved into it’s final stages #27 Roger “the ice man” Avants moved into 2nd place and was making a push to catch Robertson. Behind Avants was #9 Juston Simonson who also appeared to have a strong car as he eventually worked his way past Avants for 2nd. With just 5 laps to go the caution came out for #5 Trent Phillips who spun in turn 2. These final 5 laps would prove to be the most thrilling of the race as Simonson nudged Robertson and grabbed the top spot. Simonson looked as if he was on his way to victory however Robertson was determined and did a little nudging of his own on Simonson coming out of turn 2 but this time around Simonson spun ending his chance for the win. Darren Robertson went on to take the checkered flag and win his 2nd feature of the 2016 season as well as taking over the points lead due to Ursetta’s misfortune.

Great Scott’s Eatery Super Stocks

Robert Davey in the orange #18 jumped out front in the Great Scott’s Eatery Super Stock feature event with #30 Jared Keener and #22 Brian Yackey on his tail. Davey held onto the lead until 18 laps remained when Brian Yackey was finally able to overtake the position. Moments later Davey and Keener would spin after making contact in turns 3 and 4 and be hit by several cars behind them. Davey’s night would be done as he was towed from the racing surface.

When the race resumed Yackey remained out front but now was receiving a challenge from the #75 of Levi Greenly. Initially it appeared that Greenly had the faster car but as the race wore down Greenly started to fade. #9 Curtis Heldenbrand made his presence felt as he began to pressure Greenly for 2nd place. But in the end nobody had anything for Yackey as he took the victory. Greenly finished 2nd, Heldenbrand 3rd, #43 Kody Vanderwal was 4th and #3 Michael Cox finished 5th.

Legends

The Legend car main event started off with a scary crash as several cars spun in turn 1. #47 Jason Hulvey attempted to skirt the trouble on the outside but was clipped by a sideways car sending Hulvey up into the catch fence and violently spinning through the air. Hulvey was uninjured but his car was destroyed and a major cleanup and fence repair delayed the action for several minutes.

When the race resumed it was #66 Kyle Clegg who appeared to be on rails as he out distance between himself and the field. The previous night’s winner 9x Jason Irwin from Albuquerque was in second place with #22 Chris Eggleston and #15 Danny Medina right behind. After a caution and subsequent double-file restart Irwin got shuffled back to 4th place and Eggleston got by Clegg who got loose in turn 4. In the final laps a furious scramble to the finish featured a fantastic battle between Eggleston, Irwin, and Medina but Irwin muscled his way to his second straight win in as many nights.
