Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models

It would take 100 laps to determine the winner of the Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models on the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce Labor Day Race at CNS. And rookie driver #9 Justin Simonson would need all hundred laps to take home the big win. Simonson ran an strong race battling with other drivers to earn the hard-fought victory.

Early in the race it was all Kyle Ray in the #58 and #6 Dominic Ursetta who battled for the lead throughout the majority of the race but contact in turn 4 late in the race sent Ray spinning and both drivers to the rear of the field. Ray and Ursetta’s misfortune allowed #9 Justin Simonson to take control of the race but he was being pressured by #08 Jace Hansen and #84 Matt Zwinglerberg. Eventually it became a two car race between Simonson and Zwinglerberg with Simonson running up high and Zwingleberg down low. The 84 of Zwingleberg would pass Simonson in the apex of each corner but Justin would come roaring back out front on the straightaway. These two drivers thrilled the fans racing in this fashion for a dozen laps. Simonsson would eventually secure the position and the win.

UPDATE: After a post race tech inspection disqualified the #12 car Justin Simonsson was awarded the victory. It was Justin’s first ever win in the Super Late Model division. The #32 car of Brett Yackey was also disqualified.

Lincoln College Pure Stocks

A massive field of 27 Lincoln College Pure Stocks took the green flag for their 25 lap feature event. #8 David Lewis and #4 Mike Steward were on the front row and began to battle for the lead at the drop of the green flag. Unfortunately the race was plagued with several caution flags and at least one red flag for minor alterations and subsequent clean-ups.

David Robinson in the #7 car made his presence felt as he moved into 2nd place and challenged Steward for the top spot leaving Lewis to battle for 3rd place with #03 Tyler Mander. There were so many cars on the track that there was literally no section of pavement that wasn’t filled with action.

As the race wound down the #33 El Camino of Tyler Davis who started all the way back in 14th position moved into the race for the lead with Robinson. The determined Davis motored past Robinson to take the lead and the win, his 4th of the 2016 season. Robinson settled for second with Steward in 3rd. 4th place went to Michael Matthiesen in the #31 and David Lewis was the final car in the top 5.

With the win Davis now leads the season point standings by 55 over Jamie Ward who had back luck in the feature with mechanical issues relegating him to a 22nd place finish. The Pure Stocks have just one points race remaining on Saturday September the 24th meaning that Davis has locked up the 2016 Pure Stock Championship.

The Pure Stocks will also have a non-points race with the Super Stocks on Challenge Cup October 1st to end the season.

Legends

Albuquerque New Mexico’s Jason Irwin swept the Legends division on the Labor Day race setting quick time with a 18.785, winning the fast dash, and taking home the feature event. Irwin would come all the way from his 10th place starting spot to cruise to his 3rd feature event at CNS in 2016 in as many attempts.

The feature started with a hair raising near miss as race leader Kyle Clegg in the #66 spun coming out of turn 2 and the entire field of cars would split high and low to avoid Clegg’s car. Not only did all the drivers miss Clegg but Kyle kept the car going and no caution was displayed. Clegg would rally and eventually finish an impressive 3rd place behind #15 Danny Medina who was 6 car lengths behind Irwin at the finish.
