Clegg Double Dips in the Elite V-Twin Saturday Night Showdown

(07-21-2018 Dacono CO) The large crowd at Colorado National Speedway were treated to tight racing in every division for the Elite V Saturday Night Showdown. Westminster’s own Kyle Clegg won both the 25 and 30 lap Legend Car features while Cheyenne’s Michael Scott and Greeley’s Brett Yackey came home victorious in the Pro Trucks and Late Models. In the Figure 8s it was Justin McKeachie from Aurora grabbing his second straight win

Elite V Twin Legend Cars

The Legend Cars were the featured division on Elite V Twin Saturday Night Showdown at CNS and a double feature was on tap. The first feature was a 25 lapper and started in ominous fashion with a large crash involving 5 cars in turn 3. #05 Nick Cooper and #13 Jason Hulvey appeared to suffer the most damage yet thankfully none of the drivers were injured.

After the cleanup Kyle Clegg snagged the lead on lap three and set sail. Clegg later gave up the lead to #06 Mike Gallegos and #15 Danny Medina when the 66 got stuck in traffic. Clegg would eventually work his way back to the front after a fantastic battle with Gallegos and Medina and take the win in the first feature.

The second Legend Car feature would be a 30 lap event and the top ten finishers from the first feature would be inverted at the start which placed Clegg in way back tenth position.

Impressive rookie driver Ryan Rudolph in the #96 car would lead the first portion of the race but started to get loose coming out of turn four giving up the lead to #3 Wayne Barlock Jr.

Eventually Danny Medina who was missing the entire front cowling on the 15 car would pass Barlock for the lead. With less than half of the race remaining Clegg began to battle Medina for the lead and the two drivers put on a great show for the fans. In the final laps it was much like the first feature with Clegg, Medina and Gallagos going toe-to-toe for the victory. Medina was literally giving it everything he had to catch the Clegg often times drifting out of turn four and brushing the wall just to keep the car from spinning Yet try as they might neither Medina nor Gallegos could get around Clegg as he went on to win the second feature. Medina and Gallegos were 2nd and 3rd with Barlock and #21 Ryan Jones being the final cars in the top 5.

Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks

It’s shaping up to be a historic season for Cheyenne Wyoming’s Michael Scott. Scott is the current point leader in both the Pro Trucks and the Super Late Models. Michael doesn’t seem to be playing it safe in any way as he powered his way to the front of the feature and won his 4th Pro Truck main event of the season.

Jeff Walbaum in the #8 truck finished second after leading the early portion of the race while #9 Curtis Heldenbrand grabbed an impressive 3rd place. #43 Kody Vanderwal was the fastest truck on the track at the finish but had to settle for 4th place just ahead of Brian Yackey in the #22 truck.

With the feature win Scott completed the clean sweep of the event also winning the fast dash and setting quick time with a 17.424.

Galitz Transportation Late Models

Greeley’s Brett Yackey and Westminster’s Nathan Gasser paced the field at the start of the Galitz Transportation Late Models. After a brief battle Yackey assumed the lead of the race and remained in control for the first half of the race. Yet at the mid-way mark in the race a double file restart was in order and both Gasser and Gering Nebraska’s Chad Cowen attacked Yackey as the drivers went 3-wide into turn three. Cowen was down low, Gasser up high and Yackey was caught in the middle.

When the cars exited turn four Gasser had retaken the lead and the CNS crowd was at the edge of their seat. Yackey showed determination as he began to reel the leader in and eventually pulled up on the inside of Gasser. Side by side the 7y and 53g cars battled for the win and at one point both drivers drifting in unison out of turn four.

Brett was just too fast down low and eventually wore down Gasser and took the lead and the win. It was Yackey’s 4th of the 2018 season. Cowen slipped by Gasser to steal 2nd. Impressive rookie driver Dave Hondel in the #07 was 4th and was clearly one of the fastest cars on the track in the closing laps. Derek Smith in the #31 was the final car in the top 5.

Chick-Fil-A Figure 8s

Mike Wolfe Jr. in the gorgeous #3 Chick-Fil-A Figure 8 car lead almost the entire first half of the feature event holding off #2 Jeremy Jackson. But after Jackson had to pit it placed #50 Justin McKeachie in 2nd spot and with 13 laps remaining McKeachie took over the top spot. Both Jereme and Jared Wall were non-factors in the race each with mechanical issues (although Jared would salvage a 3rd place finish).

In the final laps of the race Harry Livermore Jr. came into the picture and began to push McKeachie for the lead. McKeachie hung on for the win literally spinning sideways across the line in dramatic fashion. Jared Wall made a late surge to secure a 3rd place finish with Wolfe Jr. in 4th. #4 Sean Smith rounded out the top 5.
