Fans And Drivers Beat The Heat For Galitz Transportation “You Call, He Haul” Night At CNS

July 9th, 2022
It was a hot one at Colorado National Speedway both on and off the racetrack on Saturday, July 9th. Race fans and drivers endured near-triple-digit temps while the sun set behind the grandstands, and were treated to a night of close, clean racing. Fantastic car counts across all divisions made for a competitive night, and the on-track excitement was more than enough to help forget about the heat.

Mountain States Fire Protection Super Late Models
Feature 1 – 30 Laps
The No. 3C driven by Cassidy Hinds with the No. 05 of Nick Cooper beside her showed the way to the green flag for the first of two SLM races. It didn’t take long for Cooper’s No. 05 machine to find the front, and he set out to open up a comfortable lead on the rest of the pack. Just two laps into the 30-lap race, the No. 61 of Matt Martinez ended up on the uppermost side of a three-wide battle and spun-out in Turn 4 resulting in a caution, the pack was able to avoid him and continue racing. Meanwhile, Cooper’s No. 05 continued to lead the No. 3C of Hinds in second and the No. 89 of Zach Morris in third. Cooper set sail and guided the No. 05 out ahead of the pack while the No. 87 of Timothy Trostel III and the No. 89 of Morris did battle for second place, as Hinds’ No. 3C fell back to fourth. Cooper’s No. 05 machine settled in nicely in the lead as the driver guided it around lapped traffic without breaking a sweat, and the checkered flag flew over him after an overall clean race.

Feature 2 – 40 Laps
The familiar black and green No. 12 of Bruce Yackey started on the pole, but Cody Dempster in the No. 24 put pressure on him as soon as the green flag dropped for the second SLM feature. Just four laps in, Dempster’s No. 24 machine opened a healthy lead while the battle for the second position heated up. Brett Yackey in the No. 32 eked into second, while Bruce Yackey’s No. 12 slipped further into the pack, battling for fourth alongside the No. 22 of Chris Eggleston. The race was clean until Lap 15, when the No. 07 of Daniel Mares spun out in Turn 3, causing a caution. The ensuing restart saw Dempster’s No. 24 start alongside Brett Yackey’s No. 32. Brett Yackey took the point, but Dempster didn’t give in, and the two raced door-to-door for lap after lap, narrowly avoiding contact with one another as they battled for the race lead.
Up front, Dempster’s No. 24 got the better of Brett Yackey’s No. 32, and with clean air he was able to open a healthy lead on the rest of the pack. Feature 1 winner, Nick Cooper in the No. 05, made contact with Timothy Trostel III’s No. 87, bending the hood at an awkward angle, but the two continued on. With three laps to go, the No. 3 of John Negri III spun in Turn 4, but stayed clear of the racing surface and avoided causing a caution. While Dempster’s No. 24 showed the way, Brett Yackey’s No. 32 fell under pressure from Morris’s No. 89 for second, but Yackey held onto the position at the line. Dempster captured the second feature SLM win of the night.

Galitz Transportation Late Models
Feature – 30 Laps
The No. 94 of Kyle Morse and the No. 6 of Tommy Roe started on the front row for the LM feature race. Roe’s No. 6 leaped out front while a good battle shaped up behind him between Morse’s No. 94 and Michael Hannah’s No. 15. Hannah in the No. 15 kept the pressure on the No. 94 of Morse, and after a nine-lap battle, Hannah’s No. 15 got around to claim the second position. Up front, Roe’s No. 6 became a target for Hannah’s No. 15. Hannah gave it everything he had, and even as the No. 15 machine got loose under him, he maintained second place and began to cut into Roe’s lead. With 18 laps left, a multicar incident in Turns 1 and 2 saw the No. 116 of Mark Willy, the No. 51 of Eric Meisner, and the No. 63 of James Starcher facing the wrong way as the red flag flew. Meanwhile, the No. 8 of Dan Alamaa had to pit to address an issue with his race car. Alamaa, who was second in points, managed to get back out onto the racetrack before the race went green again, albeit without a hood on his No. 8 machine.
On the restart, Roe’s No. 6 and Hannah’s No. 15 went after one another for the race lead. Hannah got out front and pointed the No. 15 toward the checkered flag, while Roe’s No. 6 fell to the No. 31 of Rick Smith and the No. 94 of Morse. Once he got out front, Hannah’s No. 15 settled in and fended off the No. 31 of Smith. While Hannah classed the field, a fierce battle for second place shaped up between the No. 31 of Smith and the No. 98 of Lee Kemmit. Smith barely beat Kemmit across the start/finish line for second place, while Hannah’s No. 15 captured the feature race victory.

Pueblo Bank & Trust Super Stocks
Feature – 25 Laps
The No. 99JR of Ryan Raley Jr. started on the pole and led the 20-car SS field to the green flag. However, he was quickly tracked down by the No. 9 of Brent Cave, who pulled the No. 49 of Chris Cox up to the front with him. Cox’s No. 49 took over the point as he and the No. 9 of Cave passed Raley Jr. A good battle for third shaped up between the No. 3 of Michael Cox and the No. 23 of Jordan Abeyta. Halfway through the race, the No. 97 of Kyle Stidham spun after suffering contact with another car, causing a caution and bunching the field back up. On the restart, Cox in the No. 49 slipped past the No. 9 of Cave as Abeyta’s No. 23 entered the picture for second. The race stayed clean until the No. 60 of Jonathan Lindberg, one of the night’s Dash victors, got loose and limped to the infield. However, the track stayed green. The field of Super Stocks strung out behind leader Chris Cox’s No. 49 machine, and he showed the way all the way to the checkered flag to take the feature win.

Once in a blue moon, CNS runs Demo X across the dirt ramps in the infield, and they took to the track on Saturday night for the first time this season. As wrecks took out the leaders, a small bright yellow No. 45 car took the win in the Demo Cross Lite class, while the No. 34 truck survived major incident – including a rollover! – to claim the Demo X Heavy victory.
