Red Bull Legend Invasion Finale A Thrilling Conclusion For Double-Header Weekend At CNS

September 4th, 2022
A few special times a year, Colorado National Speedway lights up on a Sunday night, and the Legend Invasion Labor Day weekend concluded with an absolute thriller of a night thanks to our friends at Red Bull. Fans of all ages were treated to the second fireworks show of the weekend, and took advantage of our top-of-the-line concessions for a Sunday evening to remember. Circle Drags kept the crowd entertained during intermission, with a stock Subaru snatching the win out from under a modified SUV, and the Legends racers from all over the country showed their passion and prowess to win in their two Feature events.

Dash A – 17 Laps
The No. 1 machine of Ryan Land, a rookie in the LEG division, took the green flag on the inside while the No. 75 of Austin Hackenberg clung to second place. The race stayed clean, and the field strung out behind Land’s No. 1 machine as he led the way and was crowned first Dash victor of the night.

Dash B – 17 Laps
The No. 99 of Tessa Marine and the No. 45 of Cole Tuttle put on a good show from the front row, until Marine’s No. 99 went for a spin in Turn 3 six laps in. She was able to keep going and nobody else was involved, battling back up to third place by the end of the race. Tuttle’s No. 45 crossed the finish line in first, while the No. 34 of Zach Mullins secured the final transfer spot to the Fast Feature by making a hard-earned pass for fifth on the last lap.

Fast Dash – 17 Laps
Tyler Reif’s No. 9R took off on the drop of the green flag, followed closely by the No. 21 of Ryan Jones. As the laps ticked down, the No. 50 of Tyler Wiggans had worked his way to second, putting Jones’ No. 21 back to fourth place. With four to go, however, Wiggans’ No. 50 spun out and was struck by the No. 7 of Kenna Mitchell, causing a red flag. Thankfully, all drivers were ok, and racing resumed. Jones sent his No. 21 after Reif’s No. 9R machine, but Reif got to the checkered flag first for the Fast Dash win.

Feature – 20 Laps
The LEG Feature got off to a hot start as they went three wide for the lead barely after the green flag had waved. The No. 27 of Brian Harlow got the lead when it all shook out. Two laps in, three cars got together in Turn 2, causing a caution. Harlow’s No. 27 and Bryanna Bruce’s No. 12 restarted on the front row. They battled each other relentlessly as the laps ticked by, with neither driver able to truly ditch the other, racing neck-and-neck, side-by-side with Bruce’s No. 12 on the inside and Harlow’s No. 27 taking the high line. With six laps left, Harlow’s No. 27 eked into the lead, but Bruce’s No. 12 was still a threat, stealing the lead back just a few laps later. With two to go, Harlow threw the No. 27 low and drove it in deep, putting the two race cars on the same wavelength yet again. The battle was settled only when Harlow’s No. 27 slipped ahead of Bruce’s No. 12 at the last second, securing the Feature win after a tough, competitive race.

Fast Feature – 50 Laps

The Legend Invasion Finale started with the No. 3j of Jordan Holloway and the No. 32 of Cody Milan up front, but the impressive field had only just barely gotten into Turn 1 when chaos unfolded. The No. 3j got sideways in front of everybody, stacking up a bunch of race cars and eliminating their shot at the $3,000 purse. When things were sorted out, Milan’s No. 32 and the No. 51x of Brenden Ruzbarsky got up front in a hurry, but it didn’t take long for the No. 9R of Tyler Reif to make himself known. Reif, hot off his Fast Feature win from the Legend Invasion event the night before, led the No. 22 of Chris Eggleston for several clean laps, while Jones’ No. 21 lurked and waited for his shot at the lead. With 22 laps left, Eggleston’s No. 22 made the pass in Turn 2 (that’s a lot of 2s!) but he couldn’t shake Reif’s No. 9R machine, who stayed glued to his rear bumper.
With 15 laps left, the No. 5 of Gary Wegener got turned, prompting a caution flag. The restart saw Eggleston’s No. 22 and Jones’ No. 21 leap ahead of Reif’s No. 9R as the trio went three-wide. Reif’s No. 9R and Eggleston’s No. 22 made brief contact, opening the door for Reif to reclaim the lead. Eggleston’s No. 22 stayed close to Reif’s rear bumper, and the checkered flag fell on the No. 9R out front for the Legend Invasion Finale win.

Dash – 10 Laps
A good battle between the No. 5c of Kyle Carrasco and the No. 90 of Alex Rodriguez held the attention of the crowd during the first SS Dash. The two race cars were evenly matched throughout the short 10-lap Dash, as Rodriguez chased Carrasco around and attempted to use the high side to find an advantage. Carrasco’s No. 5c couldn’t be stopped, and he nabbed the Dash victory just one night after his first-ever Feature win.

Fast Dash – 10 Laps
The No. 7 of David Robinson showed the way for the first half of the SS Fast Dash, but with five to go, the No. 49 of Chris Cox had battled from his fifth place starting position to challenge Robinson for the win. Robinson’s No. 7 put up a fight, but it was the No. 49 of Cox who hoisted the trophy after his Fast Dash win.

Feature – 25 Laps
The SS field battled side-by-side, two- and three-wide for the first few laps, with the No. 9 of Brent Cave and the No. 11W of Scott Long giving each other a run for their money up front. Five laps in, the No. 8 of Isaac Almaswari slowed in Turn 3, causing a yellow flag. Cave’s No. 9 took advantage of the restart to get out front, but Jordan Abeyta’s No. 23 set out to track him down from second place. Then, the No. 15 of Brendon Knowles and the No. 97 of Kyle Stidham went spinning off Turn 2, and the No. 21 of Chris Nelson was sent to the rear of the field for his involvement. Cave’s No. 9 and Cox’s No. 49 battled hard at the front on the restart, while the No. 23 of Abeyta fended off the field to hold down third place. Abeyta’s No. 23 just about wore out the rear bumper of Cox’s No. 49, slowing him and allowing Cave’s No. 9 to open some distance between them. Cave had to navigate lapped traffic, allowing Cox to gain back some ground, and he sent it one final time on the last lap. Cave’s No. 9 held off the charge and earned the SS Feature trophy.

Bandit Division
CNS’s youngest drivers took to the track for their Dash, going three wide with No. 5, Reagan Fruge, out front. However, Fruge spun, handing the lead to Wyatt Dent’s No. 68 for the Dash win. Dent carried his momentum into the Bandit Feature, leading a clean race flag-to-flag to take the victory.

Outlaw Division
Dillyn Kellogg’s No. 33 took off out front for the Outlaw Dash, but the No. 21 of Madilyn Lange certainly didn’t make it easy on him. Kellogg raced cleanly to the Dash win and showed muscle early in the Feature race. Halfway through the Feature, a caution was called for debris, and Kellogg navigated a series of spinouts that happened right in front of him. Lange’s No. 21 put up a fight as the laps ticked down, and Kellogg’s No. 33 got away with the lead just barely on his way to his Feature win.

Witthar Racing Trains
One of the things CNS fans love to see on a rare Sunday night race are the Crazy Trains. They went four-wide around the first turn, swinging the brake cars around but managing to keep everything pointed in the right direction. The No. 151 Crazy Train managed to make it out of the chaos, leading charges through The X and narrowly avoiding collisions with other trios of race cars and ultimately taking it home amidst a debris-strewn track after starting second.
