Eggleston wins segment 1 yet Rick Smith takes the glory in the segment 2 at CNS

Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models

The Super Late Models competed in a 80 lap SPECIAL event on the second night of the Memorial Day Race at CNS which was broken into two segments, the first segment a 30 lap race and then a 50 lap segment to end the night. In the first segment #31 Rick Smith and #22 Chris Eggleston started on the front row. Smith quickly jumped out to a large lead leaving Eggleston to battle with #12 Bruce “the Moose” Yackey for 2nd. As the race progressed it appeared that Eggleston found his groove in the high line and began to track down race leader Smith. #11 Darren Robertson also moved past Yackey and asserted himself as a race contender battling Eggleston for position. A late race caution set up a dramatic finish as Smith on the low side battled Eggleston on the high side for the last several laps. A near photo-finish at the stripe had the crowd on their feet as young Chris Eggleston barely nudged Smith for the win by mere inches. Yackey crossed the line in 3rd, Robertson was 4th, and the bright yellow #7 of Adam Deines took home the 5th spot.

After segment 1 was complete the Super Late Model teams went to work on their cars in the pits making the necessary changes to be even faster in the last 50 laps that would cap off a great Memorial Day race.

The second segment started much like the first segment ended with #31 Rick Smith running strong on the inside and #22 Chris Eggleston running strong on the outside. Eggleston would occasionally pull up next to Smith and battle for the lead but Smith’s lower groove was a tad quicker which kept Eggleston behind. As the leaders approached lapped traffic Eggleston become temporally trapped which allowed #12 Bruce Yackey to slip past for 2nd place and #6 Dominic Ursetta into 3rd. The #22 of Eggleston was not done yet however as he used his high line to get back around both Ursetta and Yackey and regain 2nd position. As the leaders once again came up on lapped traffic heading into turn 3 it appeared that Ursetta may have picked the wrong line as all the leaders went high to pass the slower cars while Ursetta stayed low. In dramatic fashion young Ursetta dove under and the pack of cars were 3 abreast by turn 4. The skill of the drivers was evident as they navigated toward the finish without incident. #39 Jack Nugent was now gaining on the leaders and worked his way past Darren Robertson to take 4th position. With all the battling for 2nd position going on behind Smith who was leading it allowed the Gering Nebraska driver to build a 10 car length lead over the large field of Super Late Models. Smith went on to take the checkered flag with Yackey a distant second. Ursetta took 3rd, and a late race charge by #66 Darren Bucklan gave him 4th spot. Eggleston settled for 5th, with Nugent directly behind in 6th. Robertson was 7th, #84 Matt Zwingleberg was 8th, #26 Blake Harris was 9th and #7 Adam Deines took home the final spot in the top 10.

Race Central Media Legends A national qualifying event for the Legend car series brought out a large field of cars and several drivers from out of state. One of the visitors was the 9i of Justin Irwin from Albuquerque New Mexico who is one of the top legend drivers in the country. Yet once again Colorado Springs own Danny Medina in the #15 car proved he is nearly impossible to beat at Colorado National Speedway as he grabbed another feature event win. It wasn’t an easy victory for Medina as he had to work his way to the front and fend off serious battles for the lead from #06 Mike Gallegos, #58 Kyle Ray, 9i Justin Irwin, and #22 Chris Eggleston. When the checkered flag dropped it was Medina out in front, Eggleston in 2nd, Gallegos in 3rd, #34 Chris Cooper in 4th who made a daring last lap pass on Irwin who settled for 5th.

CARC Mod Coupes Perennial race favorite #55 Gary Land jumped out to an early lead over #34 Randy Whitman at the start of the Mod Coupe feature event but it was #95 Cris Muhler who was quickly working his way up from the 3rd row to challenge for the lead. Land and Muhler had a good battle for the lead but the speedy Muhler eventually worked his way to the front. Not a single caution was displayed as the coupes set a blistering pace and Muhler took his second straight Coupe feature event. Land finished 2nd and stayed within striking distance in the season points chase. Whitman took 3rd, #24 Chad Guilford was 4th and Arvada Colorado’s Jamie Bubak in the #12 Coupe was 5th.

Figure 8s A controversial finish in the Figure 8 feature event stirred the crowd as race leader #26 Nick Martinez appeared to be spun on the final lap by #17 Harry Livermore Jr. Livermore was penalized for the spin but Martinez couldn’t continue under his own power therefore NASCAR Officials determined that 3rd place driver #2 Lance Proctor was the winner. #50 Justin McKeachie was 2nd, #23 Al Duran from Lakewood was 3rd, #10 Frank Gastineau was 4th and rounding out the top 5 was #75 Mike Jensen.
